What do they look for on skin checks in wrestling?

Skin Conditions

Hygienic Principles to Reduce Skin Infections in Wrestling

Skin Conditions

There are four common skin conditions that surface on wrestlers from time to time due to the level of skin-on-skin contact inherent in the sport.

  • Herpetic lesions: clustered blisters that eventually become dry, crusted lesions.
  • Tinea, also known as ringworm: a circular, reddened fungal infection.
  • Impetigo: Highly contagious bacterial infection that present as lesions.
  • Molluscum Contagiosum: pink or flesh-colored boils.

Skin Checks

Hygienic Principles to Reduce Skin Infections in Wrestling

Skin Conditions

  •  Skin checks should be performed before each practice by the wrestler and parent.
  • At tournaments, skin checks are  performed at weigh-ins or at check-in by the host of the tournament.
  •  Any skin infection must be examined and cleared by a health-care professional, in accordance with the wrestling skin form.

  • All wrestlers must shower immediately after practice/meets.
